HER fashion designs were never cut out to be to everyone's taste.
But, love them or hate them, one thing is for sure – Vivienne Westwood's clothes, not to mention the story of her life, fascinate thousands.

And it's that fascination which has provided a financial boost to Sheffield coffers.

Organisers of the high profile Vivienne Westwood: The Exhibition at the Millennium Gallery have hailed it "a huge success", bringing more than 40,000 visitors to the city.

If you missed the exhibition listen to our podcast tour with Access Curator Louise Pullen.

Fans came from across the globe to see the exhibition – which closed at the weekend - contributing more than £1 million to the local economy.

Information collected during the exhibition indicated 42 per cent of visitors travelled to Sheffield specifically to see the show and, of those, 12 per cent chose to stay in the city overnight.

Nick Dodd, chief executive of Museums Sheffield, said: "We are thrilled with the success of the exhibition and how it has benefited the city and the South Yorkshire region as a whole.

"We are committed to bringing exhibitions of international significance to the Millennium Gallery and we were delighted with the response from our visitors, many of whom travelled great distances to see it."

The exhibition was the only UK showing of the international tour outside London, featured more than 140 designs, and examined Westwood's career from the 1970s to the present day .

Richard Jones, chief executive of Yorkshire South, said its impact had been huge.

"We are overjoyed with the effect the exhibition has had on the local visitor economy and the knock-on effect on other tourism businesses in Sheffield and the wider region," he said.
