YOUNG volunteers from Sheffield-based telemarketing company Ant Marketing were part of the team which lifted the winner's trophy in an army charity challenge in York – and raised £500 for Hallam FM's Cash for Kids.
The challenge, designed to encourage young people to experience army life and help them get active and interested in joining the armed forces, was held at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks.
The four men and one woman from Ant chose to represent Hallam FM and joined forces with a group from Galaxy FM to create Team Radio Station. They competed over two days against a number of other teams in a range of gruelling and challenging exercises.
On the first day the teams were issued with army fatigues and trained by soldiers on an obstacle course and electronic shooting range, after which they camped out under plastic sheeting. There were no showers and the teams slept in the clothes they had worn all day.
The following day the teams were timed on actual and blow-up obstacle courses and scored on the shooting range. Ambush tactics, camouflage manoeuvres, patrolling, stalking and archery followed. It was the Ant team which came out on top and they were presented with a trophy.
Chris Steed, who is an Ant client support manager and captained the team, said: "It was very hard work and there were mosquitoes everywhere but we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even more so having raised so much cash for local kids."
