A GROUP of young people have secured their dream job after fending off hundreds of hopeful applicants to join the apprenticeship programme at Kier Sheffield LLP.
The apprentices will be full time employees of Kier, working on a three-year apprenticeship programme combining day and block release with Sheffield College. During the programme the apprentices will move around the business at agreed times to give a variety of work, working towards the full apprentice framework which includes key skills and NVQ level two, with the option of going into level three.
Five of the new apprentices have been recruited from the existing City Stewardship programme, a partnership between Community Training Services (CTS), Sheffield Homes and Kier Sheffield. The programme provides learning opportunities for disengaged teenagers, and contributes significantly towards keeping Sheffield clean, safe and green.
Kier Sheffield training officer Andy Biggin said: "In previous years our apprenticeship programme has proved very popular and successful, and this year has been no different."
Adam Carr, apprentice plumber and former City Stewardship learner, said: "I'm really over the moon to have got this opportunity with Kier. I think it's brilliant and I'm really looking forward to the next three years. Being on the City Stewardship programme has helped me a lot. It has given me confidence and experience to go onto a full modern apprenticeship."
Kier Sheffield senior operations director, Simon Bullen says: "We continue to invest in the city, making a long-term impact and an ongoing contribution to employability where we provide jobs for local people."
Kier Building Maintenance North regional development director Dan Maher says: "The delivery of long-term, sustainable education, training, employment and community investment is central to Kier's business plan and recognised as integral to continuous service delivery improvement. It's great to welcome the new apprentices. This is an exciting opportunity for everyone involved and is a fantastic benefit to the organisation."
Kier currently has 81 apprentices training to become qualified joiners, plasterers, heat and vent fitters, gas fitters, electricians, plumbers and customer liaison officers.
