A TEAM of Yorkshire businessmen are preparing for the challenge of a lifetime – and are calling on financial assistance from the business community.
The four-strong team, led by finance director Kevin Newton, are undertaking a four-day trek across the Skaftafell National Park in Iceland in memory of Charlie Liversidge, the Sheffield boy who was knocked down and killed in his neighbour's driveway
a week before his eighth birthday.
The team, which also includes Kevin's colleagues Mark Chandler and Robert Smith, will be subjecting themselves to temperatures as low as -20 degrees celsius, in addition to ice and snow-covered rough terrain.
They will be self-sufficient during the trek, carrying all supplies themselves without the help of support vehicles.
The team is hoping that local businesses will pledge monetary support which will go towards the cost of return flights to Reykjavik for the four men.
All other sponsorship money will go directly to Charlie's Trust, the charity the Liversidge family set up in the wake of Charlie's death in April to help children achieve in education.
Kevin Newton, who works for independent financial advice firm Prosperis Ltd, is looking forward to the trek but is all too aware of the difficulties:
"Although I'm a keen walker, trekking across snow and ice-covered terrain in Iceland for four days is another thing altogether.
"It's going to be tough but we are doing it in memory of a fantastic little boy whose adventurous spirit is living on through Charlie's Trust."
Companies interested in supporting the trek should contact Kevin Newton direct on 0113 287 8200 or email kn@prosperis.co.uk
lA family fun day held at Garforth Town FC raised £4,000 for the trust.
The event featured a climbing wall, bouncy castle and raffle, as well as face-painting and cake stalls.
A five-a-side football tournament also ran throughout the day with ten teams from Yorkshire battling to win the Charlie's Trust Trophy. The team from Leeds-based firm Mercury Tax beat Cicada Communications 3-0 in the final.
