SECURITY consultants SGW Associates made a good move to UK Steel Enterprise's Innovation Centre in Sheffield – it acted as a catalyst to expansion and trebling of turnover in less than a year.
SGW moved from Nottingham where MD Simon Whitehouse found financial help was focused on technology companies with £2m turnover or more. "There were no initiatives for companies like us, small and just starting to grow," he says.

"Our move to the Innovation Centre was certainly the right one for us. We have been able to access funds from the owners UK Steel Enterprise, which has given us working capital to expand and employ more people as well as have our office centrally placed, on excellent road and rail links with the rest of the UK."

SGW Associates provide expert security advice to some of the UK's leading companies and organisations with much of their current work being done in London, including one with a Dubai-based customer providing high level security measures to protect their new high profile, luxury apart-hotel in the city centre.

Rapid growth has also meant new opportunities opening up for new avenues of work. As awareness of the company is raised and their reputation grows, companies in a variety of industries are turning to them for training advice and help. And this has led to plans to provide security training courses.

"We were approached to provide bespoke training relating to an 'As Installed' CCTV system for a major public sector client in the north as they usually send their people down south where these sort of courses are normally run," said Simon.

"One of the facilities the Innovation Centre provides is an excellent training room which is ideal for running day-long courses on managing security systems. We have the knowledge, the skills and the people to be able to do this."

These future expansion plans mean he is also recruiting more new people, key individuals who can bring both new skills and contacts in new markets such as the hospitality market which they are currently exploring for new business, to build upon recent success. Meanwhile they are also getting ready for the company audit this month for ISO 9000, the sign of quality service.

Allan Wood, manager of the Innovation Centre and UK Steel Enterprise, regional executive, is delighted with SGW's continuing growth.

"We like to hear the companies in the centre shouting about their success. SGW are proving to be an ideal tenant and we will do everything we can to help them continue growing."
