Sheffield MP and former Home Secretary David Blunkett has attacked the Conservative Lib Dem coalition's decision to axe the Government's offices in the region as an "act of centralization."
Mr Blunkett said: "This is a removal of power from those who are close to our city and to our communities – with all that that implies for the prospect of jobs and for adequately protecting people in Sheffield from the impact of the cuts which are be
ing visited on us, especially in local government.
"It means that routes to preferment will be entirely metropolitan, dependent on staff based in London."
