AMID the economic despair, a new report indicates Sheffield's star is rising in the business world, offering an attractive alternative to firms currently based in the south-east.
The city has risen from 15th to ten in a league table of places offering the best deal for companies looking to relocate.
Important factors were easy access to markets, customers and clients, value for money office space, ease of recruiting qualif
ied staff and the cost of staff.
Two hundred companies were surveyed in the UK Cities Monitor 2008 report, published by Cushman & Wakefield.
The results also saw Sheffield move from 12th to third for the development of 'back office' functions such as human resources and accounts, and from 15th to fourth in terms of potential for setting up a call centre.
City development agency Creativesheffield said the study was evidence that its economic masterplan was on track.
Director of strategic marketing Brendan Moffett said: "With dramatic leaps such as this, businesses based in the south-east who are really feeling the bite of the credit crunch simply cannot ignore the opportunities that are available in Sheffield for business investment."
With the downturn in the economy prompting many companies to consider relocation and restructuring, Creativesheffield believes "Sheffield now has a fantastic proposition for inward investment".
