IN THE current economic climate it has become common to hear about companies cutting back and downsizing.
One company to buck this trend is Pre-Formed Windings of Sheffield, which has recently completed a 30% expansion of the production facilities at its Hackenthorpe site. This is providing an additional 1750ft2 of manufacturing space, enabling the company to meet ever-increasing demand for its products, particularly from abroad.
Pre-Formed Windings is a specialist engineering company that manufactures a huge range of medium and high voltage windings for large electric motors and generators.
In recent years the company has grown dramatically, now exporting more than 45% of production. The new investment in production facilities allows this growth to continue by improving the company's ability to compete in global markets.
The high level of demand for Pre-Formed Windings products means that the new production area is already in use.
The official opening was performed by Deritend Industries MD Richard Hale. Unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion, Mr Hale said: "In today's depressed economic climate it is more common to hear about company closures and cutbacks than new investment initiatives.
"That's why our expansion is good news for British engineering; it proves that growth under difficult market conditions is still possible."
Vernon Fletcher, Operations Director for Pre-Formed Windings, said: "The other good news is the job opportunities for specialist personnel and support staff resulting from our new investment in facilities and the fact that the expansion corresponds with the company's 40th anniversary.
"This milestone proves the dedication and skill of the staff that have worked here over the years. We are confident that our new production initiative will help us build upon these skills, enabling us to meet our goals of sustained growth and profitability over the next 40 years."
