A summit hosted by Cllr Paul Scriven has provided the council with information about buying local.
"I've met people who, in 11 years of working with businesses in South Yorkshire, I've never come across before," said Tony Cherry, from the Federation of Small Businesses.
"This is a very good starting point, and it was a great opportunity to talk
to people and to find out more information for our members, so that they are better able to win public sector contracts," Cherry continued.
The Buy Local Summit was a Sheffield Council initiative to get information about local suppliers.
As a result of the summit, organisations such as the council are now going to look at how it can help create a level playing field for local companies to tender for business.
Cllr Paul Scriven, Leader of Sheffield City Council said:
"Buying local is the right thing to do for the people of Sheffield. The Council should actively be supporting local businesses and local people, both to boost the local economy and to reduce our carbon footprint, so I'm delighted the changes we're bringing about are striking such a chord with the business community in Sheffield."
It is planned to repeat the Buying Local summit in six months to review progress.
