Bringing a touch of Steel to Team GB
IT has been a busy week but I'm loving it.
After last weekend's games against Nottingham and Hull myself and four of my Steelers team-mates joined up with Team GB for a tournament in France, the Euro Challenge.
We were the lowest ranked nation at the event, alongside the host country, Pool A Norway and a Lithuanian side that beat us in last April's World Championship.
On Tuesday an inexperienced GB side beat Lithuania 5-3. What a result and it was even better for the Steelers boys as Jason Hewitt scored on his senior debut and Ashley Tait wrapped up the scoring.
Twenty-four hours later I was in the right position to score twice in a 5-3 defeat to Norway, I know we lost and we were disappointed after the game, especially as we led 3-1, but this was a great result for us. We had a Pool A nation on the rack for a long time, we played well, really well.
This GB get together will hold us in such good stead for the World Championships. I don't think this will be our final squad, we left many senior pro's at home and I think they will join us.
With the guys being together they feel more a part of the set up and we get to know how coach Paul Thompson wants us to play. I think we've surprised many people over the last few days and when we go to Austria many teams will be aware of Team GB and that has to be good, doesn't it?
We play Belfast later today and although the body will be tired it's a game we have to win. We're just four points behind the Giants with three games in hand and we want to finish as high as possible in the league. Talking to all the guys on GB duty many of them think Coventry can be caught as they have a difficult run-in. We have won eight straight league games and hope to make it nine against Belfast and a top 10 against Basingstoke at Ice Sheffield on Sunday. Maybe these guys were right!
Last weekend's games were tough. Nottingham fought to the end but we fought harder to beat our arch rivals 2-1. On Sunday I couldn't have given Hull more credit. We have owned them this year but they came out hard and didn't let go. We had to dig in and find a way to win, we did and that again shows how much we are improving.
I think we're going to have a great second half of the season - there's a Challenge Cup and Play-Offs to win and we want them both.
See you at Ice Sheffield on Sunday. Come and help us out and give us a cheer against the Bison who have Steve Thornton back in their line up. It will be tough but I'm sure we can win it.
