THERE are good parts to being a captain and there are bad parts.
I suppose the last week hasn't been my favourite in charge of our team.

Don't get me wrong, every one of the players has been exemplary in their effort and attitude in this difficult week. So what do I refer to?

It is of course our recent bad run of results which concluded in our owner, Bob Phillips, addressing all of us players after our 4-0 home defeat last Saturday to Manchester Phoenix.

To be honest, as I walked off the ice I half expected Bob to appear.

Knowing Bob as I do from our Cardiff base together, I know what a passionate man he is, so when he walked into the dressing room obviously upset it wasn't a great shock.

A lot of what Bob said I could relate to, he was very annoyed and, looking round the dressing room, you could see many of my team-mates were surprised that he had entered the room in this way.

Bob was right in much of what he said to us; our performances hadn't been good enough. But to be honest we all knew that anyway. We're all proud professionals and we knew that our performances as a team in Coventry and against Manchester were simply not good enough.

Bob did surprise me when he then put the whole club on two weeks' notice. As a player and as a captain, I obviously think that that was the wrong thing to do.

Many people will disagree with me, though, especially after our much improved performance in Coventry two days later.

I can assure every Steelers fan that the improvement was down to our own professionalism, our own desire and our own pride and didn't have anything to do with the notice period.

There isn't a player who wants to leave this dressing room, either of their own free will or the club's. Every player here is committed to the shirt and their team-mates and has a genuine desire to please our supporters.

If our coach decides to make changes we have to respect it, we don't like it and we don't want it to happen but we all accept that it may.

I can honestly say that I have never been put on notice before and I didn't like it this time, it's not a nice feeling.

However it doesn't make me play any better or worse and it doesn't make me try any harder. I am a professional and I sit with 15 other professionals. We give our all every night and I am proud of the guys who sit next to me.

Was I embarrassed in Coventry after losing 7-1? Yes of course I was. Was I embarrassed after being shut out at home by Manchester? Yes of course I was. But I tried my best and so did my team-mates.

Tomorrow, at home against Belfast we have to set many records straight, we have to win the game, of course but, we have to put in a performance that sets the tone and sends a message that this Steelers team can win silverware and bring pride, not only to the supporters, but to the city as a whole.
