THE ever-popular John Lill returns to the city next Friday to play Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 1 Op 15 with the Manchester Camerata at the City Hall as part of the Sheffield International Concert Season.
The concerto was actually his second, No 2 (Op 19) as we know it, being the first one he wrote but he spent so much time revising and rewriting it that his second essay, No 1, was published first.
Not that such things matter too much when John Lil
l plays Beethoven, concertos or sonatas. He is recognised the world over as a master Beethoven pianist.
Also being performed is the composer's First Symphony Op 21, written to large extent under the influence Haydn, as his Piano Concerto No 2 had been more readily under Mozart's which is why he spent so much time altering it.
Haydn's music starts the concert with an early symphony, No 22, 'The Philosopher' as it is known.
