SHEFFIELD Music Club, founded 70 years ago in 1938, has announced details of its 2008-09 season.
There are six concerts in it to which non-members are are warmly invited, starting with a return visit by celebrated harpsichordist Alan Cuckston on October 10.
He will be in the company of Baroque flautist Martyn Shaw and their programme takes in
music by Byrd, Bull, Bach, Handel, Scarlatti (probably Domenico) and Loeillet – take your pick, there are two, brothers and both flautists!
On November 21 Ben Gregor-Smith, gifted cellist son of Bernard Gregor-Smith and Yolande Wrigley, plays Bach's D major viola de gamba sonata, Brahms' Second Cello Sonata and Paganini's 'Moses Variations' (variations on an item from Rossini's Mosé – Moses) with pianist Daniel Browell.
Concert Royal (soprano, recorder/ flute, cello, harpsichord) celebrate Purcell's 350th birthday on January 23, linking items together with short readings from the diaries of Samuel Pepys.
Among works offered by violinist David Milsom and pianist Ruth Milsom on February 27 are Schumann's late Op 105 and Mendelssohn's early Op 4 violin sonatas.
Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin is the main piece in a song recital from David Townend and pianist Jane Robertson on March 20.
The sixth concert on May 8 is a piano recital given by Malcolm Forbes-Peckham whose programme includes Beethoven's 'Appassionata' Sonata, the Bach/ Busoni Chaconne and Fantasie on themes from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.
All concerts start at 7.30pm and are at Shirley House, Psalter Lane, except Alan Cuckston and the Purcell birthday concert which take place in the adjacent St Andrew's Psalter Lane Church.
Admission for visitors is £6, £10 for Alan Cuckston, and membership £27, the latter getting you into member-only events like the Chairman's Evening on September 19, this year featuring piano duo Chris Andrew and Amanda Downing.
