THE Hallé return to the City Hall tonight two weeks after the announcement that the Manchester-based orchestra is to programme the Sheffield International Concert Season for the next three years.
Very much an 'in-house' concert tonight, the conductor is the orchestra's principal guest conductor Cristian Mandeal and the soloist in Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is its first-rate principal clarinet Lynsey Marsh.
The seasons will not, however, be
all-Hallé affairs with visiting orchestras continuing to be invited. Nevertheless, it shows remarkable commitment to Sheffield.
Lynsey studied at Chetham's School of Music, Cambridge University – being a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra while there – and the Guildhall where one of her teachers was Thea King.
She joined the Hallé in January 2001 having been a Chamber Orchestra of Europe and English National Opera member and guest principal with many orchestras, including the Philharmonia, Royal Opera House and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
She has given recitals for BBC Radio 3, performed at London's two premiere chamber music venues, the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room, and appeared as a concerto soloist with Philharmonia, London Symphony and London Philharmonic orchestras.
Concerts abroad with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe wind soloists include trips to two major US festivals, Tanglewood and New York's Mostly Mozart Festival.
Bringing us neatly back to Mozart's Clarinet Concerto tonight – but will Lynsey play it on the 'basset' clarinet she used in his Clarinet Quintet at the Bradfield Festival of Music in June 2005?
