A SIZEABLE and appreciative audience heard Martin Saving's lunchtime recital.
Initially, perhaps, a trifle tentative in Bach's D major gamba and klavier sonata, the Elias Quartet's viola player soon warmed up and was producing near-viola da gamba sound, superbly supported by pedal-free, Bachian piano playing from Tim Horton.
Uncommon warmth emanating from the piano keys beautifully underpinned the soulful 'singing' coming from the viola strings in the andante.
Britten's Lachrymae had tonal firmness and, at times, intense and moving utterance, while Schumann's Märchenbilder was the icing on the cake with its elan and pliancy in the central movements, the viola's alto quality being heard to lovely effect in the first and the fourth executed with smooth, steady legato playing.
