TALK about coincidence! Both Music in the Round and the City Hall, perhaps more precisely its classical music consultant Simon Webb, have both come up with the idea of putting on a series of Rush-Hour Concerts concurrent with each other in the near future.
At least they don't clash, probably helped by the fact that MitR's series of four concerts up to March 13 is one-third of the 12 that will take place in the City Hall Ballroom up to June 5.
The City Hall series, being marketed as five40five (the concerts start at 5.45pm), gets away first on January 16 – dates and days are variable – and Simon Webb explains its aims.
"The idea is to develop audience artistic outlook with varied programmes, the long-term intention being to programme more adventurously in the Oval Hall. Also, attracting a new audience with diverse programming that would feed through to classical concerts in the Oval Hall.
"By using chiefly members of orchestras who perform in the International Concert Season, we hope to build an audience-artist relationship in the more intimate and relaxed environment of the ballroom.
"In addition, the series celebrates the diversity of musical excellence in the region and there is already interest in what it might do to assist the promotion of the 'early evening economy' in the city."
Brendan Moffat of Creative Sheffield, whose job it is to promote the benefits of living in Sheffield, picks up on this.
"Along with other major cities around the UK, Sheffield must continue developing its early evening attractions.
