SHEFFIELD University's recent opera production in Dublin has received a rave review in The Irish Times.
The paper, which doesn't normally review amateur performances, waxed lyrical over every aspect of of the first Spanish opera Celos aun del aire matan (Jealousy, even of the air can kill).
Anthony Trippett, head of Hispanic Studies at the university, was praised for bringing "together the infectiously wise minds of director Jane Davidson and early music luminary Andrew Lawrence-King".
Every member of the student cast came in for praise by name with the summation: "Cutting their incisive way through the swathes of memorised Spanish, all these performers revealed degrees of potential for vocal professionalism. Laura Packer (Céfalo)… fully realised hers."
The review goes on to mention Jane Davidson's "foolproof direction" and music director Andrew Lawrence-King radiating "confidence in his motivated collaborators".
The performance was at St Bartholomew's Church where the recently-appointed director of music is Fraser Wilson, a recnet Sheffield University graduate.
Funding difficulties have meant plans to take the production to Spain and Poland have had to shelved but, says Tony Trippett: "There have been expressions of interest recently and we are not discounting the idea of a revival in 2009."
