AS Sheffield again looks set to miss out on a visit by Opera North in its 2008-9 season, the opera-starved part of the city's population can look to forward a regular seat at the New York Metropolitan Opera.
Cineworld Sheffield is again carrying Saturday afternoon matinee performances in the Met's new season, relayed live and in high definition as they happen with many of the world's best-known opera singers in them.
There are ten operas and, adding to the good news, tickets to see them have been reduced to £15.
The first on October 11 is Richard Strauss' Salome with Karita Mattila in the title role and the second on November 8, Doctor Atomic by John Adams, is a more contemporary tale about the development of the atom bomb. Gerald Finley is Oppenheimer.
November 22 brings a rare staging of Berlioz's The Damnation of Faust with Marcello Giordani and Susan Graham and on December 20 Renée Fleming is the courtesan turned nun in Massenet's Thaïs with Thomas Hampson as the monk obsessed with her.
Another famous pairing, Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna, appear in Puccini's bitter-sweet La Rondine on January 10, and on January 24 Stephanie Blythe and Danielle de Niese are husband and wife in Gluck's Orfeo et Euridice.
Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón are a massive lure to see Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor on February 7 with veteran Samuel Ramey also in the cast.
A new name on the block, Christina Gallardo-Domâs sings the title role in Puccini's Madama Butterfly on March 7 and, on March 21, Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez are reunited for Bellini's La Sonnambula.
Their fellow cast member in last season's Fille du Régiment, Alessandro Corbelli, reappears on May 9 in Rossini's La Cenerentola (Cinderella) with Elina Garanca in the title role.
As there were sell-outs in the initial screenings last season, they have been moved to Cineworld's larger Screen 17 theatre.
