Byrne’s offering

Celebrity chef Aiden Byrne brought his Great British Menu to Sheffield this week as he demonstrated his winning ways to catering students at City College.

Byrne, who has made it through to next week’s final of the BBC2 series, showed students his take on classical frogs legs and a main course prawn cocktail – complete with liquid nitrogen-formed passionfruit purée.

He said: “It’s really important to inspire young people going into the catering industry, because it can be really tough to stick at it, especially in the early years.”

Pick of the pies

The Broadfield makes the best pies in the country – and that’s official. The Abbeydale Road pub, part of the Forum Café Bars group, has beaten thousands of others up and down the country to be judged the winner of the competition, staged by industry bible the Morning Advertiser.

“We beat all the gastro-pubs around the country! That makes me so happy for the kitchen team,” said boss Kane Yeardley. “Nothing fancy, just proper cooked pies with fresh ingredients, made by chefs who care.”

A choice of home-made pies, with chips and peas, is £6.95, available seven days a week at the Broadfield and its sister pubs.

Taste for the exotic

Horse meat may be off the British menu for the time being, but shoppers have no problem with eating zebra, crocodile, or even kangaroo, it seems… Bakewell’s Original Farmers Market Shop reports a surge in sales of exotic meats since the start of the ongoing scandal. Owner Richard Young says: “It has boosted our sales by 20%. Now we’re hoping it will play a long-term part in getting local shoppers back to the high street.”

Grow your own…

Grow your own apple tree at a free workshop this weekend. Grow Sheffield is teaching the art of fruit tree grafting as part of an initiative to increase the number of fruit trees around the city. Participants can take their tree home and watch it grow. Workshops take place at Grimesthorpe Allotments, 11am-4pm, Saturday and Sunday.

Red Nose cakes

Workers at city-centre Aizlewood’s Mill are celebrating Red Nose Day in traditional style – with cake! Staff are staging a bake-off on Friday to raise funds for Comic Relief. It follows the success of last year’s competition to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Chocolate pudding

chocoholics take note: the next Pop-Up Puddings event takes place on Monday at Cocoa in Ecclesall Road. Five puddings will be served, with soft drinks and teas on offer, or take your own wine. Tickets £15; only 23 places available: www.eventbrite.co.uk/event/5531127752

Hostel take-over

Sheffield- based Cafeology has won a national contract to supply coffee to the Youth Hostels Association. MD Bryan Unkles says: “The prospect of developing the hot beverage offer throughout this fine charitable organisation is extremely exciting.”
