Axing bus service just barbaric, Nether Green
The proposal to cut the 86 bus service from Nether Green to town via Ecclesall Road within a month will deny public transport to a large population in the suburbs of a major city, including the elderly, disabled and infirm.
To travel to town will now involve an uphill walk to the Fulwood Road and a roundabout journey on a traffic-clogged route at rush hour, with seven schools and no bus lanes, adding at least 40 minutes to what was a three-mile journey. This travel time will increase with the extra traffic as a consequence of the added commuters from Nether Green.
Ecclesall Road will get even more congested with those residents who go back to driving.
But getting to town is only a part of it. The nearest three supermarkets are on Ecclesall Road. Will those without cars have to walk a mile each way to the nearest bus, with heavy shopping on the way back? This is a popular destination with shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. There are three doctors' surgeries on this route.
In summer for the fit the walk might be a pleasant extra 15 minutes on their journey. Imagine this in the dark and rain and cold of winter.
Imagine your children walking this route on a winter's night, since so many teens like to meet up in the cafes of Ecclesall Road. First they took our post office, now the means to get to the nearest alternative at Hunters Bar!
For the elderly and infirm there are no public transport options. They will need to pay for taxis or stay at home, isolated. This is a serious denial of their rights and a curtailment of their quality of life. The council cannot surely allow this to happen to its tax payers?
For the sake of the environment the government and local authority are trying to persuade us to get out of our cars and use the buses. To dismantle a public service in this day and age is nothing short of barbaric. The people have a right, and the council has a duty to maintain a decent public transport system.
