Balanced debate not blackmail

SCHOOLS Minister Jim Knight stated in The Guardian letters page (February 4) 'Building Schools for the Future is one of the biggest school rebuilding programmes ever and will see every single secondary school rebuilt or refurbished.'

Given this commitment Parkwood should see a new school built regardless of the outcome of the academies consultation. (Funding boost for academy bid, Telegraph, February 1).

We need a balanced debate and genuine choice concerning the future of educational provision in our community, not blackmail. If those who back academies were really confident of the benefits they would not need to resort to telling us we don't get a new school unless we accept it.
