Can you help with riddle of the stone?

OVER three years ago my wife, Maureen and I went on a lovely holiday to Selworthy in Somerset.

On one of our rambles out very close to the Exmoor, Devon coastline overlooking the Bristol Channel, we did a detour to the burial grounds of the lovely, say 13th century St. John Evangelist Church at Countyspurgh.

Just before entering the porch and to my right was this small but very interesting gravestone (pictured right).

I have my reservations as to what the skulls and engravings are.

I wonder if I may call upon your readers to help me out of this conundrum?

It’s been bothering me quite long enough.
