Don't miss out on much-needed cash

Your OAP correspondent (Sheffield Telegraph Letters 25 June 2009) suggested that the description 'pensioners are better off' is inappropriate when your only income is the basic pension and a small works pension.

It appears that OAP is not claiming either pension credit or council tax benefit to which OAP is almost certainly entitled.

My mother was in a similar position and, after much persuasion, decided to apply. In fact, I had to sit her down and not let her move until she'd completed the applications. She was entitled to both.

She has now persuaded a number of her pensioner friends to apply. She describes the significant additional income she now receives as having made the difference between 'just surviving' and now 'enjoying a comfortable life'. She says she has never been as well off as a pensioner, for nearly 25 years, as she is today.

I'd like to encourage all OAPs in a similar situation to apply for both pension credit and council tax benefit.

I'd also urge the family and friends of such OAPs to 'insist' that they apply. They will grumble at the time but, later, the only grumbles will be the ones they make about their own failures to have applied earlier.
