How about some joined-up thinking?

In your last edition Gillian Gehring rightly drew attention to what she called the scandal of road access to the station. What has been less remarked upon is that access to the station for bus passengers has also been worsened since its recent facelift.

Passengers arriving in Sheffield by train now have to climb up the ramp to a stop opposite the Showroom cinema to catch a bus, or hike to the Interchange. There would have been plenty of room for a more convenient bus stop lay-by just by the station entrance (where the former 60 bus used to terminate years ago) but that was ignored in favour of ornamental trees.

Similarly many bus passengers to the station used to be able to alight on Sheaf Street just opposite the station, but that stop was long ago removed presumably in favour of moving traffic.

Moreover the FreeBee city centre bus service is of little help as it doesn't go near the station and its stop in the interchange is almost as far away from the station as it can be. (In contrast, the equivalent service in Leeds stops in the station forecourt!) Perhaps it is too much to expect too much in the way of joined-up thinking by those responsible for our transport infrastructure, given the fragmentation of responsibilities for transport in th|is country.
