Is this what we want in our city?
I AM writing to draw attention to the propsed development of the Hooters bar and restaurant at Leopold Square.
For those who do not know, Hooters is an American chain using female waitresses, scantily clad, to serve food and flirt with customers.
Employees are employed on their looks and how they look in the regulatory vest and hot-pants, with the Hooters logo sprayed across their breasts. Obviously intelligence and personality are not part of the criteria to be a 'Hooters girl', it's all about how you look in the uniform.
Is this the sort of bar and restaurant we want in out city, let alone Leopold Square? At the moment, the Square is a swish and contemporary part of the city featuring some of best eateries and bars Sheffield has to offer. The luxury boutique Leopold Hotel draws in business people and celebrities and gives the right image of Sheffield.
Now this will be all spoiled by a tacky American chain, polluting this charming development. Do you really want inebriated men congregating in the square while you are tucking into your curry at the Aagrah?
Not only is this wrong for Sheffield but gives the wrong message to the young people of today. Women have the choice where they want to work, but using them as objects predominantly based on their looks is the horrifying. Employers are contractually obliged to put up with sexual harassment as stated in their handbook (as found online):
1. My job duties require I wear the designated Hooters Girl uniform.
2. My job duties require that I interact with and entertain the
customers.
3. The Hooters concept is based on female sex appeal and the work environment is one in which joking and sexual innuendo based on female sex appeal is commonplace.
4. I do not find my job duties, uniform requirements, or work environment to be offensive, intimidating, hostile, or unwelcome.
This is not acceptable in a modern society. Ambition and intelligence is ignored, they are merely eye candy serving beer to their lecherous customers. People need to be educated about the affect that objectifying women has.
