No extra money

MAY I correct the story 'Power to the people with seven new assemblies' (July Telegraph, July 18)

The article announces that the existing Area Panels 'are each being allocated 50,000 to spend on 'parks, libraries and street cleaning'.

I am afraid that this is not quite the case. The new Lib Dem Council has offered to each Area Panel the opportunity to move around up to 50,000 of services which are already being provided in the area.

So, for example, a local community might want extra dog bins, another street sweeper or extra library opening hours – that's fine, but they will have to decide to cut something which is currently being provided in order to pay for it.

A good idea maybe, but rather misleading to suggest it is additional money!
