Scandal of road access to station

NO-ONE who arrives at the station and goes on foot across the square, up Howard Street and on up to the Millennium Galleries and Winter Garden can fail to be impressed by the design of the water features.

It is adventurous and visually exciting. It is also convenient to leave the station by tram or also to cross the road to the bus station although there are much discussed problems about crossing the station or entering it from the tram.

However the road access to the station by car or taxi is, in my view, a scandal. It is made worse because as a resident for some time I can remember when the car entrance and exits were distinct and the taxis were kept separate from the private cars and could queue and then leave the station with ease. I also remember that there was a post box that has disappeared.

What is required is that cars and taxis do not use the same narrow road to enter and leave and that waiting taxis do not block the entrance and exit but have a properly designed area – when a busy train comes in there is a long queue of passengers waiting for taxis and a long queue of taxis trying to get through to the passengers. Furthermore taxis and private cars dropping off passengers should be separated so that they do not block each other and the entrance and exit to the multi-story car park should not block the only road exit from the station and the routes that enter and leave should not cross each other as they do now.

I am still in a state of disbelief that the traffic chaos around the station was actually planned to be this way.

Is there no way in which a rescue can be affected? There is a very large empty building site across the slip road from the station. Could it not be used as a taxi waiting area and another road put through so that there is a one-way system past the station? It would be really great to have a station that not only looked good but was also convenient to use.
