Time to fight this moors restriction
Our father Stephen Morton was a pioneer and lifelong campaigner for access to and the protection of the countryside.
A founder member of the Sheffield Ramblers' Association and the then Council for the Preservation of Rural England, he worked tirelessly for 60 years for rights of way and the right to roam.
In 1971 the Ramblers' Association, with the co-operation of Sheffield City Council, created the Stephen E Morton Plantation on Blacka Moor in recognition of his work and a plaque was dedicated by the Lord Mayor for all to see as they walked between Totley and the Peak District.
What an affront to his memory to learn from the two letters in the Sheffield Telegraph of August 24 that the council are now allowing restriction of public access to the moorland and footpaths donated to the citizens of Sheffield by J G Graves and entrusted to the local council in perpetuity.
We hope that the Ramblers' Association and other bodies dedicated to countryside matters will act now to fight this, as our father would have done.
