Transport links put people in danger
I APPLAUD the letter from Gillian Gehring (June 25). She is absolutely right to complain about the scandal of road access to the railway station, and her suggestions for improvements are excellent.
However, I believe that she seriously understates the problem. The present arrangements, for the reasons that she gives, are not merely inconvenient but very dangerous. I fear that, at busy times, someone, whether on foot or on wheels, may be injured or even killed; at busy times, the situation is quite chaotic. I have written twice about these problems to the local traffic authority and have received no reply.
Even the other modes of access to the station leave much to be desired.
The so-called Interchange is nothing of the sort; it is a bus station, requiring quite a long walk and the crossing of a busy road, into the railway station (compare Barnsley). That is fine for those who are still fit and independent, but is pretty hopeless for the disabled, parents with children to supervise, or people with cumbersome luggage.
More or less the same comments apply to the tram link on the level above the station.
Is this the best Sheffield can achieve?
