The personal experiences of the head of Sheffield's only nursing home with charity status are helping reshape it as tthe home of choice for people looking for expert respite, convalescent or long-term nursing care.
City-born Jill Ward has spent the past two years overseeing the first stage of a five-year development plan for Broomgrove Nursing Home, off Ecclesall Road. Much of her conviction and passion for patient care is borne out of her own experience – she looked after her grandfather after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and her grandmother who had leukaemia.

Broomgrove's charitable status means that every penny of surplus it makes is ploughed back into improving the standard of care for patients and residents.

Jill lives in Oughtibridge with partner Jim and children Emma, aged nine, and Sam, five.

Dam Flask

Having lived in Sheffield all my life, I forget how lucky we are to be able to reach the beautiful countryside within a few minutes from most locations within the city.

I live close to Dam Flask and this is a lovely spot to walk, or sit, and take in the views around Bradfield and the Loxley Valley. When I have time (which isn't often since the kids came along) I love to park up in a nice spot and do some watercolour painting. When I'm about 60 I might have the time to do this on a regular basis. Until then, I'll keep dreaming of having the time…

Comedy Club

I enjoy having a laugh and there's no better way to wind down and relax after a week at work. The Comedy Club at the Memorial Hall always provides a good night out. They have a great range of up-and-coming comedians as well as some better known ones. The entertainment is great with three acts plus compere, a bar and the opportunity to dance till late.

Sheffield Wednesday

Another thing close to my heart is Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. Having watched and supported them since the age of seven (I still have a season ticket on the kop) this has been a real labour of love.

Watching SWFC mirrors life, as it's full of ups and downs. I'll always view SWFC fondly, as this became my Saturday job… I always used to go to the matches (home and away) with my dad and, as a result, despite my mother's nagging, he never pressured me to get a Saturday job.

Clothes and shoes

Another passion of mine is clothes and shoes. This is why my wardrobe doesn't shut and we've had to get a much larger shoe rack installed…

I like things that are slightly different, so I keep my eyes open for little boutiques. I especially like the 'Odd Molly' label. Ecclesall Road is a haven for shops like these and potentially costs me a fortune as I work nearby…

Owlerton Greyhound Racing

A night at the dogs is always fun – even if you don't win (which is the usual scenario). It's good to go with a group of friends or the kids and have a drink, chat and a flutter. The pork sandwiches aren't bad, either…

A good curry

When it comes to eating out there's not much that beats a good curry. Nirmals on Glossop Road provides wonderful, authentic Indian dishes in a traditional setting.

Nirmal Gupta is always on hand to provide advice on the varied menu and 'persuade' you to try something new…

A new favourite is The Mogul Room on Sharrowvale Road. I've only just become acquainted with this Indian restaurant but the menu is extensive with lots of dishes that are slightly different. All are guaranteed to be delicious and will cater for all tastes. The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed, too.

Parks and Countryside

We are very lucky in Sheffield to have lots of well maintained parks and green areas. These provide a rich source of pleasure for the kids. As my daughter informed me last Mother's Day, "the day is about taking us out and keeping us happy and entertained". No change to any other day, then…

As we live close to Oughtibridge Park this allows the kids to let off steam in a well maintained and safe environment. We also regularly attend Hillsborough Park and Arena for football training and also visit Endcliffe Park (and café), Millhouses Park and Whirlow. We travel out of the city boundary on a regular basis for trips out and although not in Sheffield, Cannon Hall at Cawthorne is also a big favourite with the children and is only 25 minutes from where I live.

Time to relax

As life is so hectic with work and family commitments, once or twice per year my sister-in-law and I treat ourselves and have a day at The Spa on Glossop Road. We spend the whole day there having treatments, being pampered and relaxing.

The atmosphere is lovely, the staff are friendly and it's a lovely way to chill out and have a bit of 'me time'. Once we're looking and feeling good we then hit the town for a night out.
