A SCHEME set up to feed homeless people – with money donated by Sheffield restaurant-goers – has raised more than £1,000 in its first year.
Charity Streetsmart appealed to local restaurants to take part in the scheme in the run-up to Christmas. Only Nonna's, in Ecclesall Road, took up the challenge, but their customers raised £1,250 in £1 donations during November and December.

Streetsmart organiser Sue Beardon said: "Small beginnings, but we're very grateful to Nonna's. We hope Streetsmart will grow this year.

"Already Platillos have expressed some interest and Nonna's will gladly run it again. There is so much that needs to be done to help homeless people in Sheffield – and there are many committed people in the city willing and able to make it happen."

The sum has been rounded up to £1,500 by Streetsmart and will be handed over to a Sheffield day centre for homeless people on June 5.

The presentation will take place during the inaugural AGM of SAVE (Sheffield Agencies for the Vulnerable and Excluded), which will also include a performance by the Dead Earnest Theatre Company.
