A SHEFFIELD real ale pub has closed after less than a year.
Owners Abbeydale Brewery called time on The Moon in Upperthorpe Road because it was losing too much money.

They bought the premises – formerly The Office and The Eversley Arms – as a sister business for their first pub, the Rising Sun at Nether Gr
een.

The Moon opened at the end of May with ten real ales and a large selection of continental and Belgian beers.

Out went the televisions, pool table and gaming machines as two rooms were refurbished to try to create a more homely feel.

The Moon was intended to become an addition to the real ale circuit around Kelham and Shalesmoor but appears to have been too much on the fringe.

"People had to deviate from the Upper Don Valley trail. We saw quite a few people but not in sufficient numbers," said Mr Morton.

Options are now being explored for the future of the premises, possibly being run as a pub under a tenancy agreement as opposed to a manager employed by Abbeydale.

"I don't think it's doomed but it would take rather too long for us to build it up. I think it could work well but not under our management."

Mr Morton said more could possibly be made of the back room, which has been used for music concerts, but this would probably work better through a music promoter, not Abbeydale, which is now concentrating on its brewery at Aizlewood Road and the Rising Sun.
