THE annual Sheffield beer festival has found a new home in the open air.
After plans fell through to relocate to Endcliffe Park, organisers announced this week that they have been given approval to erect a marquee in Cemetery Park, next to the General Cemetery at Sharrow, from October 2 to 4.
"The format of the festiva
l will be the same as what we planned in Endcliffe Park, with the added benefit of being closer to the city centre," said local Campaign for Real Ale spokesman Andrew Cullen.
Details can be finalised now that permission has been granted by the trustees of the park, off Cemetery Road, near the junction with Summerfield Street and Washington Road.
The park is becoming a community favourite, used earlier this year for a big South Yorkshire gay pride festival, for example.
Camra had planned to move its Steel City Beer and Cider Festival to Endcliffe Park but was unable to meet a council deadline to supply all the details so that a licence could be granted. Cemetery Park already has a licence that covers such events.
Last year the beer festival was held at the Darnall Liberal Club but the real ale enthusiasts believe an outdoor venue will prove more popular and offer room for expansion over the years.
The festival opens at 6pm on the Thursday and is open from noon to 11pm on the Friday and Saturday.
A marquee will accommodate a bar with "unusual, new, rare and interesting beers from across the UK along with some old favourites".
There will also be a cider and perry bar and a continental beer bar.
A separate 'LocAle tent' will showcase beers from local breweries such as Abbeydale, Bradfield, Kelham Island, The Brew Company, Sheffield Brewery Company and Thornbridge.
There will also be a food tent supported by the Original Bakewell Farmers Market shop.
Live music will be staged each evening, and local brewers will talk to customers about their beers and the brewing process.
