AFTER more than a decade at the top of Sheffield's restaurant scene, Nonna's this week announced major expansion plans.
The Ecclesall Road restaurant, bar and delicatessen is set to launch a new venture in Chesterfield this autumn, on the main route between the M1 and the Peak District.

Nonna's, Chatsworth Road, will incorporate a 90-seat restaurant, a caffé and delicatessen (Nonna's Cucina), a first-floor Milanese-style wine and cocktail bar and an outside catering service.

The arrival of such a well-established operation will make a significant impact on the Brampton area, just west of Chesterfield town centre, which boasts a growing artisan community and more than a dozen bars and pubs – but no full-scale restaurant.

"Chatsworth Road is like Ecclesall Road was ten years ago and it's got real potential," said Nonna's founder Gian Bohan.

"We've dabbled at other things over the years but we've never really had 100% commitment to do something equally as good as Ecclesall Road until now. We're very excited about this, we've got so many ideas."

Tim Turner, managing director of developers Blue Deer said: "It's a real coup for the town to have such a prestigious operator and we see them acting as a real catalyst to stimulate the transformation and regeneration of Chatsworth Road."

Construction work is now under way on the restaurant, which will occupy the largest unit in the development devised by Sheffield-based architects Journeyman Design.

Nonna's is due to open its new operation in mid-October. Meanwhile up to 20 new staff are being recruited.

The new operation will serve classic Italian regional dishes, plus fine Italian produce, home-made pasta and breads, artisan cakes and take-home meals.

Gian said: "The restaurant business is hard at the moment but you've got to take a long-term view. We want to be an institution in Chesterfield, to become part of the community. We aim to be there for the long term."
