ending the situation be reviewed in two years. The crunch will come on Monday when councillors decide whether there should be another open air café on Devonshire Green. Already there is one linked to The Forum.
The latest application involves installing a stainless steel mobile catering unit on the green, serving up to 20 seated customers.
Initially it was intended to protect the area with a gazebo but planners prefer a catering trailer with a "higher design specification" and parasols for the tables and chairs. It is suggested that the outdoor café can stay open until 10pm, then the tables and chairs will be taken into Restaurant Toscana. No alcohol will be served.
Letters have been received from The Forum and the medical centre in Devonshire Street, both concerned that a lack of toilets could lead to customers using their facilities. But the council says the toilets at Restaurant Toscana will be available.
lFinal touches to the refurbishment of Devonshire Green, financed with contributions from developers of surrounding student and private flats, are due soon with the insertion of mosaics in the sculpted seating areas.
