THE covers came off the influential Michelin Guide this week - revealing something of a coup for the Peak District with two new listings.
Top honours go to brothers Michael and Bryan Thompson, whose Druid Inn at Birchover has been awarded a coveted Bib Gourmand, for 'good food at moderate prices'.

"It's nice," said Michael after learning of the accolade. "Bryan and I have worked at a lot of places that had rosettes or stars, but until now it's always been someone else who got the credit. It's nice to get it for yourself."

The Druid was taken over three years ago by Sheffield chef Richard Smith, with Michael as head chef and a partner in the business.

The ivy-clad inn underwent a major refurbishment and opened in January 2005 as the Peak District's first real gastro-pub. Eighteen months ago it was bought out by Michael, Bryan and their parents, who see the Michelin award as a vote of confidence.

Also new to this year's guide is the all-organic Walnut Club at Hathersage, awarded a two 'couverts' rating.

MD Richard Mills was thrilled with the achievement, having made no secret of his aspirations since the bar and restaurant opened two years ago.

"It was always our main aim to gain entry into the guide and we set out our stall from day one," he said. "Many people thought it was impossible, especially for a place with such a relaxed style and live jazz nights, but it's great to prove them wrong! Now we're ready to show our consistency and impress for the year ahead."

Fischer's at Baslow Hall and the Old Vicarage at Ridgeway both retain their Michelin stars and Richard Smith's Artisan at Crosspool keeps its Bib award. Others with two couverts are Rafters at Nether Green, Bluefin at Hunter's Bar and Greenhead House at Chapeltown.
