CHAMPS sports bar and restaurant in Ecclesall Road is closing this month for its first major refurbishment since it opened 13-and-a-half years ago.
Starting on Monday, October 13, the main changes will be made to the bar to make it more welcoming and family friendly and to prepare for an opening time of 9am so that it can compete with other cafes in the area selling coffee, sandwiches and cakes during the day
The restaurant will also be revamped. Richard Smith, who runs the Artisan/Catch restaurants at Crosspool and Thyme cafe at Broomhill is being brought in temporarily as a consultant. Changes will be made to the menu, although "favourites will remain", said a Champs' spokesman.
The refurbishment is expected to take two to three weeks and follows local businessman Jim Harrison taking over the premises.
"We are not losing the sports theme, but it will be slightly different," added the spokesman.
Some of the sports memorabilia that has appeared on the walls over the year is due to be auctioned. However, there will still be plenty left to ensure the sports flavour is not lost.
