THE Milestone gastro-pub is the sole new entry from Yorkshire in the latest Michelin guide to eating out in pubs.
"We've had an amazing year, our profile and reputation has continued to grow and this really is the cherry on top of the cake," said co-owner Matt Bigland, who attributes the accolade to their championing of local produce and seasonal menus.

Head
chef Simon Ayres said: "We have a great line-up of talented chefs. They have risen to every challenge and this recommendation is a just reward for their efforts."

The Kelham Island venue is celebrating its place in the 2010 guide with the launch of three new menus: for the downstairs gastro pub, the upstairs restaurant and an Early Bird selection.

Dishes feature modern twists on a classic theme, such as potted beef with mustard pickle and home-made crumpets, lamb breast lasagne and squid with beetroot purée.

Carl's celebrity chance

CELEBRITY chef Jean-Christophe Novelli could be cooking up a storm at Cubley Hall, near Penistone, if head chef Carl O'Mahoney has his way.

Carl has won the chance to cook with JC as part of a campaign run by brewery Carlsberg – and now he hopes to win a visit from the great man himself.

Carl travels to Chesterfield next week to take part in a masterclass with the Michelin-starred chef. Chefs will then take part in a cook-off, with the VIP visit as top prize.

Back to the future

THE old-style Champs is back. The pioneering sports bar and restaurant in Ecclesall Road has been redecorated, given new furniture and has walls crammed with memorabilia again to recapture the spirit of the original enterprise.

Co-founder Dave Wickett came back to oversee the changes, which followed a revamp last year.

Dave, a partner at Champs with Thornbridge Brewery owner Jim Harrison, said: "We are back to the-old style Champs with a new feel."

City pubs in beer guide

TWO Sheffield pubs have been added to the latest Good Beer Guide.

The Castle Inn in Twentywell Road, Bradway, and the University Arms, the former University of Sheffield staff club, in Brook Hill, have won favour with the Campaign for Real Ale.

Burger Co moves in

A NEW burger restaurant is set to open at Meadowhall next week, creating 20 jobs and establishing the shopping centre as the chain's first location outside the west Midlands.

The Handmade Burger Co offers a menu of over 30 burgers, hand-made with prime beef.

Co-owner Chris Sargeant said: "Deciding to expand our business, particularly with the current climate, has been a big step to take. But with our three restaurants in the Midlands doing so well we knew the time was right."

Luxury paellas

SPANISH canteen and tapas bar El Toro has introduced two new gourmet paella dishes.

The Broomhill restaurant was keen to introduce the iconic dish, but the traditional version takes too long for a tapas bar to produce. So El Toro has come up with two luxury variations that can be pre-ordered at a cost of £10 each, for a minimum of two people to share.

The dishes are both made with calasparra rice, grown in Murcia. One features lobster with a hint of saffron and the other uses fresh cep mushrooms and acorn squash.

£1.5m revamp at hotel

THE Brooklands Hotel at Dodworth is undergoing a £1.5m revamp to become a franchised Holiday Inn. The Brooklands Restaurant will retain its name – and the Famous Barnsley Chop will remain on the menu.
