ITALIAN wine specialists Peter Gately and Andrea Sgravatto have come up with the connoisseur's dream... You can taste 16 different wines, all at optimum condition; you get the pick of Italy's independent vineyards; and three of the wines are available on draught.
NonSoloVino, which opened last week on the outskirts of Chesterfield, is the first place in the UK to offer such a service.

Based on a traditional Italian enoteca, the shop combines the delights of deli (selling a range of authentic products), sfuso (the 'on draught' facility) and Enomatic - a high-tech wine serving system - only the second to be installed outside London.

This masterly piece of equipment preserves up to 16 different wines at precisely 7C (white) or 18C (red). Customers pay £5 - £10 for a plate of antipasto - meat, cheese, peppers, artichoke hearts and bread - and a number of credits. The pumps of their choice are then activated at the swipe of a card, delivering a gulp-sized taste of wine.

Sfuso wines are free to taste and can be bought by the litre in refillable containers.

There is a choice of around 300 different wines, all carefully selected by Peter and Andrea from some of Italy's most respected independent makers.

The two have been business partners for many years, but were in the furniture trade until the recent downturn prompted them to look for a new venture.

"We decided we wanted to get into something that's a bit more akin to our loves - and we both have a passion for wine!" said Peter.

Both men have homes in Italy, as well as in Derbyshire, and have built up their knowledge of wine, travelling the country to source the best on offer.

"You have to know where to buy good sfuso wine - and that's something we do," says Andrea.

"It's not our intention to be a wine bar; it's to give people the opportunity to come and spend half-an-our tasting and choosing what they like to drink.

"As far as I know we're the only place like this in the UK."

NonSoloVino is at 417 Chatsworth Road, Brampton (01246) 276 760. It will be open initially between 10am-6pm, seven days a week.
