It is aiming to move into the empty unit facing St Mary's Gate, the inner ring road, using an entrance around the back, off Boston Street, so vehicles can reach a 92-space car park.

As well as being on the fringe of the city centre, the area has a large student population.

Details of proposed changes to the building, including extensive glazing to create "more attractive" frontages, have been submitted to the council for planning permission.

Aldi, which has expanded to 400 stores across the country, says the site has been in retail use for more than 30 years and its scheme involves no additional floorspace.

Its consultants say: "Aldi are a quality discount retailer and aim to operate their stores with minimal disruption to surrounding properties.

"The proposals offer significant benefits to the local area, providing a high quality design, and accord with the planning policies for the area."

Council officers will check the application for any traffic implications, the impact on people living nearby and any effect on city centre businesses.
