MANAGERS at the Northern General Hospital can press ahead with a long-awaited scheme for a multi-storey car park.
Plans for a seven-storey development with 810 spaces at the Herries Road side of the campus were approved by councillors on Tuesday, although when the loss of existing spaces is taken into account the overall increase will be 529.

The hospital has
been under pressure for years to improve parking for staff, patients and visitors and to tackle the problem of congestion in side streets.

One of the conditions of permission for the car park is that Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust pays £150,000 towards improving on-street parking and introducing traffic management measures if the problem persists once the multi-storey has opened.

Councillors are asking for a report on the situation once the car park has been open for a year.
