PLANS for a park and ride site near Dore station are picking up speed.
Council highways officers are starting to check potential locations after pressure from residents to ease parking problems.
Coun Ian Auckland, cabinet member for transport, said the council was working with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Exec
utive as part of a commitment to increase park and ride across Sheffield.
"A number of sites, including the site of the former Hatfields car dealership, are currently being explored for park and ride to serve Dore station," said Coun Auckland.
"We are in the early stages of assessing sites and any proposals would be brought before the public for full consultation as well as to the relevant planning board. Working with SYPTE, we want to provide real travel choice for all transport users in Sheffield."
Residents believe a field off Abbeydale Road South, near the miniature railway, is also being checked as a possible site.
They are welcoming the council's response, both in terms of the proposed park and ride and aiming to introduce new parking restrictions at the bottom of Dore Road. Yellow lines are planned at staggered intervals on both sides of the road.
Susan Knowles, who lives in Dore Road, said residents were "fed up" with the parking congestion. "Some days it's horrendous."
Of the proposed council action, she said: "The sooner they get on with it, the better."
Dore station only has 20 parking spots and council and passenger transport officers have spent years pondering how to ease parking problems, including ways of improving the junction of Abbeydale Road South and Twentywell Lane.
