WORK has started on a new multi-million pound fire station in Chesterfield.
The £4.5 million facility off the Horns Bridge roundabout in the town centre will house a state-of-the art fire station along with offices, training rooms and community facilities.
The building, which is expected to be completed by Autumn 2009, al
so has green features including solar panels.
It is being built by Baggaley Construction.
Coun Paul Smith, chairman of Derbyshire Fire Authority, said: "The start of work at Chesterfield is a milestone for the service.
"It represents the culmination of many years' work to bring about a new community fire station for the area.
"The existing facility at Sheffield Road is no longer fit for a modern fire and rescue service and we want our firefighters and staff to have the best possible facilities."
Assistant chief fire officer Sean Frayne said: "This is not only for their training to help firefighters to tackle incidents such as fires and road traffic collisions but also to deliver the diverse education and prevention schemes that we run in Derbyshire."
