UNWANTED furniture from the Government headquarters at Moorfoot is being recycled as far away as Kenya.
More than 6,000 items are being stripped out of the former Manpower Services Commission building as 800 civil servants move to new offices in St Paul's Place near the Peace Gardens. About a third is going via a charity to Kenya and the rest will help
small local businesses.
The recycling is being carried out by the Attercliffe-based L&TA Group, which specialises in recycling redundant office furniture as an alternative to landfill.
Between 300 and 400 tons of chairs, desks and cupboards are being put to new use. Managing director Terry Askew said: "The furniture is over seven years old and we didn't want to send it to landfill. It is not in a fit enough condition to go into the new building because of its size and age.
"We have the storage available to donate to charity and some of the furniture will be redistributed to our warehouses and made available to drip feed to business start-ups and businesses that are growing.
"The furniture is worth about £20,000 and it would cost treble that to send it to landfill. Every desk we can relocate results in not needing to make one."
