ATTERCLIFFE MP Clive Betts is leading a new drive to speed up train times between Sheffield and London through the electrification of the line.
With the support of other city MPs, he is urging Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon to consider the case for "early" electrification of the Midland Mainline. He has taken heart from the Government's indication of extra investment in electrification for e
nvironmental reasons and said that recent engineering innovations meant the capital costs, which historically have been a barrier to investment, have now be significantly reduced.

Mr Betts said: "I'm determined that Sheffield should press the case now for the Midland Mainline to be at the top of the list when any schemes are considered. For too long the Midland Mainline has lagged behind other major lines. This is an opportunity to leap ahead. We mustn't miss it."

The MP said he was asking the council to involve organisations such as the Chamber of Commerce, trades unions and representatives of other cities and towns on the line in the campaign. "Electrification will be good for the city, good for the environment and good for jobs."
