NEW operators are being lined up for the central glazed unit of the plaza in West One in Sheffield city centre following the closure of the Moroccan restaurant, Le Marrakech.
"Three or four" offers are being considered for the replacement, say West One owners Devonshire Green Holdings, who are looking for more of a café/coffee shop business in line with their initial concept.
They want it to stay open throughout the d
ay into the evening. Before it went Moroccan, it was the Utopia coffee lounge.
Meanwhile, a neighbouring restaurant and bar, Bar 23, has been given permission to stay open an hour longer, until midnight, after satisfying the council that there should be no problems with late-night disturbance.
Five objections were received from residents of West One who live near the plaza, saying that it was primarily a residential area and complaining that the enclosed space amplified the sound of drinkers.
At the same time, there were five letters in support, with comments that Bar 23 was one of the best bar/restaurants in the city centre and top-quality, independent operators should be encouraged.
The council is attaching conditions, insisting on extra supervision of departing customers to control the noise, and will reassess the situation in a year.
Meanwhile, councillors have asked for a report on the question of balancing the generation of a vibrant night life with residents' demands for peace and quiet.
