1.The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams's tale in a new treatment by Sideway Theatre Company, a young people's group making the
ir debut production, Library Theatre, Tudor Square, Wednesday and Thursday, July 22, 7.30pm (£4/ £3 on door or in advance from 2661950 or email sideway.theatre@hotmail.com).

2.Alice, Lewis Carroll's classic tale translated to contemporary Sheffield by Laura Wade with Larkrise's Ruby Bentall in the title role, Crucible Theatre, Tudor Square, Tuesdays-Thursdays, 7.30pm (£17), Fridays and Saturdays, 7.30pm (£19), matinees, Saturday and Wednesday, 2.30pm (£12) until July 24.

3.That Face, Frances Barber as the alcoholic manic depressive mother in Polly Stenham's savage portrait of a family in crisis, directed by Richard Wilson, Crucible Studio, Tuesdays-Thursdays, 7.45pm (£12), Fridays and Saturdays, 7.45pm (£15), matinees, Saturday and Wednesday, 2pm (£10) until July 24.

4.Alcina, last two performances of Handel's opera with Sinead Campbell-Wallace in the title role from festival regulars Opera Theatre Company, Dublin. Opera House, Friday, Wednesday, 7.15pm (£10-£44).

5.Dan Cruickshank, architectural historian and TV presenter examines how Georgian London was shaped by the sex industry with the aid of contemporary evidence. Opera House, Wednesday, 10.30am (£10).

6.Luisa Miller Scenes, the Festival Chorus members covering roles in Verdi's opera get the chance to perform arias, duets, etc, from it. Palace Hotel, Wednesday, 11am (£8).

7.Sean Black, asks can an author ever do enough research? having, among things, signed up for military training before embarking on a new series of thrillers. Lee Wood Hotel, Wednesday, 3pm (£6).

8.Showcase Part 2, new work from S1 Bursary Studio Artists Jim Howieson exploring the displacement and reconfiguration of everyday objects and materials through video and sculptural works, Emily Musgrave whose assemblages and collages use forms influenced by the subtle details of everyday construction materials and Peter Martin whose combination of sculptural installations and traditional digital forms use source material from television, the Internet and popular music, S1 Artspace, Trafalgar Court, Milton Street, preview Tuesday, 6pm-8pm then Wednesday-Sunday, noon to 6pm.

9.Sheffield Flower Festival Week, displays in the Tudor Turret House with live Tudor music, Flower Trails through the historic site and a chance to meet Tudor costumed characters and talk to an archaeologist about the digs in progress, well dressings on the ancient well, floral displays amongst the romantic ruins, plant fair, children's activities, professional demonstrations of Tudor flower arrangements and the return of the bunnies to their warren home in the ancient deer park, cafe and refreshments, Manor Lodge, Manor Lane, to Friday, 10am-4pm (£3, £1.50 children, 2672828).

10.Oxfam Bookfest, coinciding with the Hay Festival an event to raise awareness of the shop and promote the need for volunteer helpers and people to donate their unwanted books, CDs and LPs, continuing with display of Martin Bedford's posters until Saturday for one week, Dave Berry and Mike Firth, signing All There is to Know, Friday, noon to 2pm; JP Bean, talk by the author of The Sheffield Chronicles, Quaker Meeting House, St James Sreet, Monday, 6.30pm (£4); John Firminger, signing Violet May and Not Like A Proper Job plus short acoustic set by Chris Firminger, Wednesday, noon to 2pm, Neil Anderson, book launch and talk on his new book the Dirty Stop Outs Guide to the 1970s, Thursday, July 15, noon to 2pm, at Oxfam, West Street. unless otherwise stated.
