I read with interest Mr Moran's letter in the Telegraph (25/7/08).
As the former cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration/planning, I can inform Mr Moran that the buildings on Pinstone Street, opposite the Peace Gardens, are to be retained, as are all the buildings from the corner of Barkers Pool down to
the HSBC on the corner of Charles St.

The former Labour administration was determined to see the retention of these buildings, and other historic buildings within the New Retail Quarter.

This was not the scenario we inherited from the Liberal Democrat administration back in 2002, where the scheme identified much more demolition of historic buildings. We were able to negotiate the retention of the HSBC building on the corner of Charles Street and the twp buildings adjacent to Leah's Yard on Cambridge St, which includes the Sportsman pub.
