JUST when you thought that the Post Office closure programme had done enough damage to our communities, more instability in our Post Office network comes to light.
On September 23 I spoke with the manager of Norfolk Row Post Office, who told me that GT News was to give up its franchise to run a post office from March next year. Alternative bids for the franchise to run a post office in the city centre will clos
e at the end of September.

This information has not been publicised.

I was also told that the Crown Post Office at the Castle House Co-Op on Castle Street/Snig Hill is to close in 15 months' time.

Both are very busy post offices in the city centre, where both residents and local businesses are struggling to pay their way.

The Moor Post Office has already closed, damaging local market traders and those on a low income. This leaves West Street, near the old Glossop Road Baths, as the only apparently secure post office in the city centre. Will this be taken into consideration while Post Office Ltd decides over the next few weeks which of its chosen outlets will close?

We have seen governments finding tens of billions to support banks, and insurance companies in massive debt because of the refusal of the government to properly regulate them.

Therefore will central government stop undermining Post Offices and end their enthusiasm for privatising this essential public service.

Are they prepared to give proper financial support to our neighbourhood post office network which should provide us with a safety net in which we can secure our lives in these increasingly difficult times?
