I HAVE recently read your articles and correspondence about the return of traffic fines concerning the tram gate in Hillsborough.
I remember that in March you published an article about the many people fined like myself for driving along the Wicker bus lane. I expect that your readers will be interested in my experience. I appealed against the fine. I won the appeal, on the gro
unds that the 'the signage gave inadequate warning of the compulsory left turn'.
I actually wrote to the council, then under the control of the Labour Party, in early February, recommending that they improve signage, after receiving the notification of a fine. Clearly little had been done to improve signage by the time of your article in March. Despite then saying that they would improve signage, they went ahead and rejected my appeal against the fine, forcing me to appeal to an independent tribunal.
For me the then council's actions are a clear example of the Labour Party's general cynical and authoritarian attitude towards ordinary people. I doubt I shall vote Labour again. I am pleased that Councillor Scriven has demonstrated a reasonable, common sense attitude towards the tram gate issue in Hillsborough. This is welcome.
I hope that the Liberal Democrats continue to show such an attitude in future.
